A man in a wheelchair was killed early Thursday morning after being involved in a crash with a vehicle in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 5:12 a.m. near Orange Blossom Trail and Holden Avenue.

Corella Simmons, 44, was driving her 1999 Mercury 4-door vehicle in the southbound lane of Orange Blossom Trail when the man, who has not been identified, tried to cross the road from east to west in a marked crosswalk, according to the FHP.

According to witnesses, Simmons had the green light and traveled into the intersection when the front of her vehicle hit the man, according to FHP.

The man was thrown from his wheelchair and pronounced dead at the scene, stated Sgt. Kim Montes in a media release.

This is not an alcohol-related accident, FHP stated, and the accident is under investigation.

All lanes on Orange Blossom Trail and Holden Avenue were reopened after being closed for part of the investigation.
