Hurricane Matthew’s winds and rain downed trees and power lines, and there is still one downed phone line over a major street in Holly Hill.

Chad Jackson and his mother moved into a Holly Hill home just days before Hurricane Matthew struck the coast.

“A very interesting welcoming committee, we were presented with,” Chad Jackson joked.

They live on Riverside Drive, where about three blocks of the main thoroughfare has been closed for almost two weeks because of a downed AT&T phone line.

Workers at the site say they cannot make repairs because it is on the same pole as a live power line. They say part of that power line is exposed and can be lethal if one of the workers comes in contact with it.

Meanwhile, Jackson and his neighbors have seen bikers and drivers cross barricades meant to keep the road closed.

“People, I guess, just taking their chances. I don’t think it’s very cool,” said Jackson.

“Are you outta your mind? I mean, just to cross. I don’t even go near it,” said Terry Hill, who lives in nearby Marina Grande.

Workers are also trying to repair flood issues which have plagued Riverside Drive for years.

Jackson finds the thought of having both downed lines and flood problems daunting.

“The combination could be lethal,” said Jackson.

A spokesman with Holly Hill says the section of Riverside Drive is the only major road left which is closed due to power lines in the city.

He says Florida Power and Light is expected to repair the exposed line by Wednesday, making it possible for AT&T to make their repairs and open the road by the end of this week.
