Westgate Resorts will be allowed to continue to build, the Orange County Commission ruled Tuesday, despite a family's protest that the construction will further destroy their vacation home.

For almost 30 minutes during the commission meeting, Corredor family attorney Brent Siegel argued for a halt to construction at Westgate Lakes resort's expansion off Turkey Lake Road in Orlando.

Siegel said the family's vacation home has been condemned because of Westgate's construction. The construction previously had been approved by the county's Development Review Commission.

"If you lie to this county long enough, if you are big enough, powerful enough, rich enough, can you get what you want? Westgate got what they wanted," Siegel said, who is not related to Westgate owner David Siegel.

When the DRC approved construction months ago, Westgate said it owned all the property on the construction site, including the Corredor family's home.

During Tuesday's county commission meeting, Westgate representatives admitted their mistake.

"What's done is done. Have there been mistakes made? Sure. But we are here to try to find solutions," a Westgate representative said.

Westgate said the Corredor family condo has been derelict for years and that the family is refusing to cooperate in negotiations to buy the property. The company also said it offered to buy the Corredor's property.

After the Corredor's home was damaged by a contractor, Westgate said it offered more money for the property and offered to replace the condo. However, it has not come to an agreement with the Corredors.
