In light of Hurricane Matthew, students at a Poinciana middle school are learning the importance of helping out.

  • Students donated boxes and boxes of supplies
  • Haitian Consulate will pick them up and ship them

Favian and Savian Santiago are typical seventh graders at Discovery Intermediate School.

"I could read any book and also I could learn anything," said Savian.

The twins love shoes, but when it came to giving back, these young shoe-collectors didn't mind letting go of 10 pairs each. And these brothers weren't the only students bringing in donations for Haiti, a country which was left in shambles by hurricane Matthew.

"Yeah it blew their houses off and they lost all their money as well," Savian explained.

His brother Favian hopes a little can go a long way. "Hoping for them to have some shelter and some items so that they can eat and play," Favian said.

In a couple of days the school managed to fill the cafeteria's stage with boxes of donations.

"It was touching to see that the community pulled together for Haiti,” said Maria Cuevas, the Title I Parent Liaison for the school. “[They] were thinking of not just themselves but were reaching out to help those in need."

Discovery Intermediate made sure to collect things that the Haitian Consulate in Orlando told them were very much needed, like clothes and non-perishable items.

"I think that was a lesson that our students carried with this and shared it with other people,” said principal Alan Ramos. “Encouraged other students to bring it in."

Ramos also said charity may not be a mandatory aspect of these students' curriculums but it's a lesson they will forever carry in their hearts.

The Haitian Consulate in Orlando will pick these items up on Wednesday and take them to Haiti with no cost for the school.
