The Lake County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission are still searching for a man who went missing while swimming in Lake Eustis Saturday.

  • Husband and wife were swimming in lake Eustis Saturday
  • Officials say he never made it back to the boat
  • Day 2 of search continues Sunday

The search-and-rescue mission was suspended around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. At 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, crews started searching the lake again.

Local fishermen are also on the lookout because there was a fishing tournament in the lake on Sunday.

“I have instructed our fishermen to be on the lookout and if they do find that person they call me and I will notify the sheriff’s department,” said Jeff Wetz, tournament director.

Search crews have a large area to cover, so they’re using sonar equipment to assist them in the search. A dive team is also on standby.

Experts say conditions on the water Sunday are better than Saturday, when crews had to deal with heavy rain and choppy waves.

“It doesn’t take a whole lot of wind for these lakes to get rough," said Wetz.

FWC said the wind could have caused the boat to drift away from the missing man because it wasn’t anchored.

The agency also said the man and his wife jumped out of the boat to go for a swim.

His wife was able to make it back to the boat and call 911.

“There could be four or five foot swells and it's very evident you need to take safety into consideration at all times and if you come out of your boat, your boat will come away from you quickly and u need to wear a life jacket,” said Wetz.

FWC said crews will be searching the lake until nightfall.
