A motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a school bus carrying students in Seminole County on Friday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred on Ronald Reagan Boulevard near Bedford Road in Sanford just before 7:30 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A Seminole County school bus with 19 students on board was traveling on Carriage Cove Way, heading to Midway Elementary School.

According to troopers, the bus driver, 68-year-old Robert Coates, attempted to cross Ronald Reagan Boulevard and pulled into the path of 63-year-old Dewey Nelson, who was riding the motorcycle.

The front of the motorcycle hit the front of the school bus. Nelson was thrown from the motorcycle and landed underneath the bus, troopers said.  

No students were injured during the crash, according to authorties.

Coates has been placed in a non-driving capacity and must undergo drug testing. He has been a Seminole Schools bus driver since November 2013. He had a previous stint with the district and also worked in North Carolina as a bus driver.

“We are deeply saddened that one of our school buses was involved in a fatal accident this morning," the school district said in a statement. "Our sincere condolences are with the family members of the deceased individual. While we are thankful our students were safe and unharmed, our focus and thoughts are with those who lost a loved one today.”

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
