Flagler County opened an assistance center on Wednesday to help people get information and some resources for their needs in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

  • Flagler County opened an Assistance Center on Wednesday
  • The center is at the Flagler County Public Library, open 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • The library is located at 2500 Palm Coast Parkway N.W.

The center is opening ahead of a potential Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Center.

The center is housed at the Flagler County Public Library, located at 2500 Palm Coast Parkway N.W. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Multiple agencies will be located at the assistance center, including the following: United Way, Stewart-Marchman-Act Behavioral Healthcare, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Flagler County Health Department, Flagler County Human Services, Flagler County Homebuilder's Association, Department of Children and Families, FEMA, and Verizon with two charging stations.

Flagler County initially set up two satellite offices, but the county announced Wednesday night that it is consolidating to one location at the library.

People will be pre-screened for necessary services and will be provided counseling.

"We are doing everything we can to help our residents get the assistance they need," Flagler County Administrator Craig Coffey said in a news release. "People are already stressed out, and it can be a daunting task to figure out what you need to do next. We are here to offer whatever support we can."

Charles Green said he he could really use the extra help after a tree fell through the roof of his home.

"My house has large trees, and trees fell in," he said. "I'm concerned, but I got to do what I got to do. I've got covers over it. I have to make sure it doesn't get wet inside the house. ... You can see where the roof is coming in."

Green said most of his food has since spoiled because he has been without power.

County Commissioner George Hanns added: "It is something that is devastating. Many people have never experienced a tragedy in their life of this significance."

The assistance center will stay open as long as people utilize them, officials said.
