A student at South Lake High School in Clermont was arrested Tuesday for bringing a BB gun to campus, deputies said.

  • Deputies: Lake County student displayed BB gun under his desk
  • The BB gun was located in the 15-year-old student's backpack
  • Student charged with possessing weapon on school property

The student was arrested by a school resource officer.

It was reported to the school resource officer that the student, a 15-year-old member of the school's Reserve Officers' Training Corps program, displayed the gun under his desk in the classroom. It wasn't known initially whether the gun was an actual firearm or a BB gun, deputies said.

The deputy contacted the student, and the BB gun was found in the student's backpack, deputies said. The BB gun wasn't loaded, and deputies said the student didn't have any BBs with him.

The student was charged with possessing a weapon on school property, which is a felony.
