It's finally time to 'play ball' at the state of Florida's first-ever all-access sports park for people with disabilities.

And it's 'home' right in our area -- Brevard County.

For 16-year-old Brittany Klenotich, getting the first official hit at the Space Coast Field of Dreams baseball diamond is a moment she's dreamed of for more than a decade.

"She just kept saying 'I want to play ball, I want to play ball'," said her mother Denise Klenotich.

Brittany suffers from cerebral palsy, and has become the poster child in the effort to build this special place.

Hundreds gathered Tuesday to officially open the five acre park for the first time.

Governor Rick Scott, who was Brittany's teammate, and others involved in the creation of the Space Coast Field of Dreams, hit the field for a celebratory one inning baseball game.

And what celebration it was at the five acre, more than $5 million park.

The sports fields and playground are made of some 300,000 pounds of rubberized playing surfaces totaling more than an acre in size.

A spot where those with disabilities can now play without limitations -- but is also open to all -- thanks to thousands of people who saw the vision and helped build it.

"They actually 'stepped up to the plate," Jim Tapp said.

The man whose dream is now fulfilled and the brainchild behind the project is Jim Tapp, a retired New Jersey firefighter who realized folks with special needs had no place to play in the county.

"If I were by myself I'd be crying. I'm trying to keep it all in. It's a great day," he says.

Brevard County Commissioner Robin Fisher spearheaded an effort two years ago to secure state funding -- which, along with private donations, paid for the modern, multi-million dollar park.

But if you see smiles like the one Brittany had this day -- the time, dedication and cost was worth it.

A public open house for the Field of Dreams takes place this Saturday Jan. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
