A DeLand woman was killed and a Sorrento man hurt in a crash on State Road 44 in Lake County early Thursday evening, troopers said.

Just after 5:30 p.m., a 2015 Toyota Tacoma driven by Gerald Balenger Jr. was headed south on S.R. 44 near the intersection of Highland Lakes Road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

That's when a 2001 Toyota Echo traveling north on S.R. 44 tried to make a left turn onto Highland Lakes Road and turned into the path of the Tacoma, troopers said.

The right front of the Echo collided with the front of the Tacoma. The driver of the Echo, Kimberly Marshall, 50, was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Balenger, 49, was taken to Florida Hospital Waterman with minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt, FHP said.

Charges are pending.
