An arrest has been made in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist in New Smyrna Beach.

Jonathan Gibson, 27, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the police release said.

According to officers, 50-year-old Kevin Meck was riding his bicycle on the shoulder of State Road 44 Thursday just before 7:30 p.m.  Witnesses told police that Meck struck from behind by a dark colored pickup truck.  The driver of the truck, identified as Gibson, stopped briefly and then left the scene, police said.

Police later received a call from a witness about a truck stopped in the 300 block of North Airport Road.  The caller told police the truck looked like it had been involved in a crash.  When police arrived they noticed the truck had damage consistent with the hit-and-run on SR-44.

Gibson was placed under arrest and his dark blue Chevy pickup truck was taken to the New Smyrna Beach Police Department as evidence.

Investigators say charges are pending.
