Big changes are coming for some young students in Orange County: The school board broke ground on a new elementary school Thursday morning.

School officials stood with Millennia Elementary students as they broke ground on the new, unnamed school.

The goal was to reassure nervous parents about what’s to come with the new elementary school, located just a few blocks from the Mall at Millenia.

Officials said a new school was necessary, because Millennia Elementary, built to handle 732, has 1,118 students.

"We needed something to alleviate the crowd," Orange County School Board Member Kathleen Butler Gordon said.

The new school is designed to handle 836 kids. School officials expect it to be nearly full upon opening this fall.

Although some parents are excited to see what the future holds for their children at the new school, other parents are nervous that school start times might change.

"Start times? Depends on what they are changing," said Pat Garrett, parent of a Millennia Elementary student.

At 4:30 p.m., the School Board will discuss the possibility again during a workshop. While some argue students are starting a bit too early, other Board Members are concerned with the costs that may come with rescheduling.

"I think we need to shift our bodies more so than spending thousands and thousands of dollars trying to readjust the time,” Gordon said.

School district officials say a principal for the new school should be announced by April, along with the name of the school. No final decision on school start times has been made yet.
