A Volusia County Mosquito Control helicopter crashed in the area of State Road 44 and I-95, near New Smyrna Beach on Thursday.

The helicopter crashed around 3:30 p.m. in a wooded area near the interchange. The cause of the crash was not immediately determined.

A spokesman with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said Brian Hayes, the pilot of the helicopter, complained of pain, but he was otherwise alert and talking.

Hayes was taken to Halifax Medical Center for his injuries, but he was released as of Friday morning.

It did take rescue workers awhile to find the pilot. He crashed off of State Road 44 on Ranchette Road.
