An investigation is underway after a man was struck and killed Thursday during a hit-and-run in Lake County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at an unknown time near the intersection of Northern Avenue and South Haines Creek Road, near Leesburg.

Troopers said William Jernigan, 64, of Leesburg, was walking in an unknown direction in the eastbound lanes of Northern Avenue.

An unknown vehicle traveling eastbound on Northern Avenue struck Jernigan, who was found in the roadway by a passerby around 8:34 p.m.

The vehicle that struck Jernigan never stopped, troopers said.

Troopers said they haven’t been able to determine what type of vehicle struck the man, but they said he was likely struck before 8:30 p.m.
