A small plane crashed Wednesday afternoon on the runway at Merritt Island Airport.

The aircraft crash landed on its roof around 1:30 p.m. after the pilot reportedly applied the brakes too hard upon landing, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue.

Fire officials said two people on board, a husband and wife, were transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital with minor injuries. The couple was not immediately identified.

The airport was briefly closed until the plane was later moved from the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration will conduct a formal investigation, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office said.
