The Lake County Sheriff's Office has released 911 calls made after a neighbor shot a teenager accused of breaking into a home Tuesday in Grand Island.

The man who shot the suspect is a retired Detroit police officer who lives across the street from the home he said the teen was burglarizing.

The Sheriff's Office said it was still investigating Wednesday whether the shooting happened the way the retired officer said it did, adding the man would not face charges.

"He's lying on the sidewalk, and I guess our neighbors have a gun to him," a woman told a dispatcher in one of several calls to 911 from frantic neighbors after the shooting, which happened shortly after noon Tuesday.

One woman who called said the teen suspect was banging on her door, telling the dispatcher, "He kept yelling to please let him in."

The retired officer, Emmett Latimer, said as he and his wife were walking through their neighborhood, they saw the 16-year-old suspect, who appeared to be casing homes in the area.

A short time later, Latimer said he saw the teen burglarizing a home.

Investigators said once the suspect realized he had been spotted, Latimer yelled at the teen to stop.

Latimer, who was carrying a gun, said the teen did not stop, but instead charged at him, prompting him to open fire.

Deputies said the teenager — whom we are not identifying because of his age, in accordance with our Crime Guidelines — was recovering and in stable condition at an area hospital.

"This is the first time we've ever had anything like this happen here," one woman told the 911 dispatcher.

Latimer was not home Wednesday when our crews went to his neighborhood to see if he was willing to speak on the story.

Other witnesses, including Latimer's wife, also called 911. The Lake County Sheriff's Office did not immediately release that call, saying they were still investigating the shooting.

"Detectives are investigating to verify it happened the way he described it," said Lt. John Herrell, with the Lake County Sheriff's Office. "If it did, he won't be facing charges. At this point, nothing has been discovered that contradicts his account."
