Hurricane Danny is located about 970 miles east of the Windward Islands. After not much overnight strengthening, Danny became the first hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm has strengthened and maximum sustained winds were clocked at 80 mph as of the 11 p.m. update.

Danny is about 2,340 miles from the Florida coast. It poses no immediate threat to any land.

Here's what you need to know about Danny at 11 p.m. Thursday:

  • Location: 13.4 N, 46.6 W
  • How far is it?
    • 970 miles E of the Windward Islands
    • 2,340 miles ESE of Miami
    • 2,413 miles ESE of Cape Canaveral
  • Winds: 80 mph
  • Movement: WNW at 10 mph
  • Pressure: 990 mb / 29.24 inches

It should remain at Category 1 strength as it travels west-northwest and approaches the Leeward Islands.

However, once it reaches the islands and the northeast Caribbean, it will likely experience high wind shear and dry air, causing it to weaken back into a tropical storm.

Long-range models differ in the solution this far out.

One of the more reliable models begins dissipating Danny early next week in the northern Caribbean, while another shows this storm holding together a little longer and turning north just east of the Bahamas. This wouldn't occur until the middle of next week, so there is plenty of time for us to monitor its progress.
