Back to school is just around the corner and the Orlando Police Department and members of the community want to make sure kids are safe as they go to and from class.

There's a reason Carldarius Patrick's family took to the streets on a hot, muggy Saturday morning.

"Right before his birthday he got killed," said Cierra Patick, Carldarius Patrick's sister

It was back in June, when the 16-year-old was shot in the head, killed, right in front of Ivey on the Lake Apartments.

Less than two months since his death, his family doesn't want anyone else die the same way.

"I just want everyone to put the guns down, I want everyone here to unite together, stop being so violent," said LaRossa Smith, Carldarius Patrick's mother.

They joined other community members, county leaders and the Orlando Police Department, hoping to put an end to youth violence.

Just a few weeks after Patrick's death, two other children were shot nearby at Poppy Park. The children suffered minor injuries. Four teenagers were arrested and charged with attempted murder.

"We want the community to come together to know that leaders in the community, that the churches support our youth, we want our youth to put down the guns, stop the violence," said Orange County Commissioner Regina Hill.

Police are hoping to keep the streets safe. They also want to strengthen their relationship with parents and their children.

"We just want the community to trust us and know that we are here for them," said Sgt. Debra Thomas from the Orlando Police Department

And with school only a few weeks away, leaders say now is the time to take to the streets, hoping their message resonates with the community.
