The ongoing I-4 Ultimate construction project is about to close a major ramp near downtown Orlando, along with a popular parking lot starting Tuesday night.

The South Street eastbound ramp to I-4 will be closed, and a parking lot under the interstate, across from the Amway Center, will be shutting down during the latest construction work.

The changes will start around 10 p.m. Tuesday, when crews begin preparing the South Street eastbound on-ramp to I-4 for its permanent closure. Officials suggest using on-ramps at Anderson Street and near the intersection of Garland Avenue and Concord Street as alternate routes onto the eastbound interstate.

As progress on the I-4 Ultimate project moves forward, say goodbye to more 100 parking spots under the I-4 overpass.

City Lot 9 South, located between Church and Pine streets, not far from the restaurants and bars lining Church Street, is often quickly filled by commuters, tourists, sports fans and folks looking to have a night out in downtown Orlando.

"I just came downtown to have a nice steak, burger, maybe a beer or two," said Steve Perez, who found a spot in the parking lot on Monday. "It's terrible for some people who live down here."

But it may be even worse for some commuters who fight to find parking, like Candace Oglespy, a Merry Maid who was not feeling very merry about the changes.

"This is the only parking garage we have to be able to park at so that we don't have to walk forever away with equipment," Oglespy said.

The Florida Department of Transportation said there are other nearby parking lots under the I-4 overpass that will remain open. City Lot 9 North, Lot 10 and the Garland Lot will be available to drivers.

FDOT said while Lot 9 South will remain closed for a long period of time, the closure will not be permanent.
