As August arrives, it's not just students that may have the back-to-school blues.

Florida's Space Coast Office of Tourism is worried about a new state law that allows schools to starter earlier in the month. Schools are now allowed to start as early as Aug. 10.

Eric Garvey, the executive director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism, is concerned a shorter summer vacation will hurt local hotels, restaurants and businesses throughout the month of August.

Most visitors to Brevard County are from other areas of the state.

Garvey said families will be less inclined to take a summer vacation in August if their children are back in school. He has high expectations for August with tourism tax revenue up 6 percent over last August.

That could dramatically drop next August, Garvey said, as more districts decide to move up school start dates.

"Long term, we will need to work on a solution to generate room demand in August," Garvey said.

Right now, the Space Coast Office of Tourism is working to shift marketing dollars to other areas of the country where they have a later school start date.

Tourism has been strong along the Space Coast so far this summer, officials said. Garvey said that's due to an improving economy.

Hotel revenue jumped about 10 percent in June compared to June 2014.

The Space Coast Office of Tourism said July looks strong, as well.
