As students go back to school in Orange County, the district is working on how and what its new police force will do, which includes using a new social media monitoring system.

The Orange County Public Schools police force will have 16 officers total.

One of the duties of the officers will be to oversee a new social media monitoring software called SnapTrends. Some parents said it violates privacy rights. They brought their concerns to the board.

"Why is it that the Orange County Public Schools now needs its own police force as well as a social media monitoring program?" said parent Cindy Hamilton.

“We have no ability to monitor anything that’s posted privately, we have no ability to monitor phone calls or anything like that,” said school board Chairman Bill Sublette.

But district officials said it doesn't violate privacy rights. They also said they are still looking to hire 11 more officers.
