We have new information about the Wildwood police K-9 that attacked a 7-year-old girl Sunday evening in Fruitland Park.

While the girl recovers from extensive injuries throughout her body, News 13s talked with trainers where Doki was certified as a K-9 about what may have gone wrong.

"Our training program is true and tried," said Bill Moraitis of the Southern Coast K-9 and Coast to Coast K-9 Teams. "Anywhere from six to 12 weeks where they spend 40 hours a week here doing training."

At the Southern Coast K-9 training facility in New Smyrna Beach, K-9 handlers and hundreds of dogs like Doki have been certified to sniff out drugs, locate bombs and apprehend suspects for law enforcement.

Wildwood Police said Doki, a Belgian Malinois, received his certification in May of 2014 and went to work for the department with Officer Douglas Pelton.

"This is the first time I've encountered a scenario where the dog has had some sort of aggressiveness," Moraitis said.

Police said Doki just passed his K-9 recertification in June.

Doki lived with an experienced handler in a backyard kennel.

On Sunday evening, in a move that surprised his handler, law enforcement and his trainers, Doki the K-9 attacked seven-year-old Julianne Goodridge after she reached her hand through the fence.

"Dog jumped over the net/fence and bit her in the neck," the victim's mother told a 911 operator. "She has a huge hole in her neck."

Trainers said it could have been a territorial instinct.

"It would be the equivalent of me walking through your front door," Moraitis said.

Wildwood Police and the Southern Coast K-9 facility say they have never heard of a K-9 attacking a person without command. For now Doki is being kept in a different kennel while an investigation looks into what went wrong.

"If my dog attacked and mangled a child, that dog would have to be put down," neighbor Christine Greenaway said. "Why isn't that one being put down?"

Police said this is unchartered territory for their department, since Doki was Wildwood's only K-9 and the first one on the force in decades.

No decision will be made about Doki's fate until the investigation is complete.

Family friends tell News 13 Julianne Goodridge underwent reconstructive surgery to her face, neck, stomach and back.  She remains at Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital.
