A home invasion suspect was shot and killed by Lake County deputies during an early morning confrontation Tuesday in Lake County.

A reporter spotted a second suspect hiding behind a truck and alerted deputies. A third man remains at large.

Lake County deputies arrived around 3:20 a.m. to a home along State Road 50 near Mascotte. A man, now identified as 20-year-old Chacarion Avant, was still inside the home when deputies arrived. Investigators said Avant stepped outside with an assault rifle, where he was confronted by deputies.

Avant was subsequently shot and killed.

Two other suspects, identified as Richard Charles McNeal and Deondre Brown, fled the scene before deputies arrived. Daily Commercial reporter Millard Ives spotted McNeal behind the trailer next to the one that was robbed about nine hours later.

“As I get closer and closer that’s when I realize it’s an actual person stooping down behind a truck, so I ran and told the deputy in the truck while the man I was interviewing ran and told some other detectives,” Ives said.

A family lives at the home where the shooting took place. Two people were injured, deputies said.

One man was pistol-whipped and taken to South Lake Hospital. Another male resident was shot at some point, but deputies haven't said who is responsible for firing the shot.

That man was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he treated and released.

No deputies were injured in the shooting.

Avant, who lived in Mascotte, was arrested in 2014 on burglary charges, according to Lake County jail records. Deputies said he pointed an assault rifle at them.

“You imagine an assault rifle that can penetrate a vest or a vehicle. We're just lucky we have a bad guy off the street and the deputy is ok,"  Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Fred Jones said.

But Avant's cousin, who said the men robbed the home in her neighborhood simply to have something to do, doesn’t believe he had to die.

“What he did was wrong but as far as him being shot, I don’t think they had to shoot him because I don’t think he pointed the gun at him,” Nanette Jackson said.

The search continues for Brown.
