A man was shot and killed Sunday night following a confrontation in a Deltona neighborhood.

Volusia County deputies were dispatched around 9:23 p.m. to the scene in the area of 551 N. Floyd Circle Road, which is near Normandy Boulevard.

According to the investigation, a 29-year-old Deltona man shot Elvis Valentin, 36, of Deltona, in defense of his brother, deputies said.

The brothers told investigators that one of them just arrived at 1526 N. Normandy Blvd. when he heard Valentin calling out to him. Valentin then confronted the brother about driving his vehicle on Valentin's yard, deputies said.

The shooter overheard what sounded like an argument, and so deputies said he went outside to see what was going on.

When the shooter walked outside, he saw Valentin holding a large knife. The knife was raised as he approached the shooter's brother, deputies said.

According to deputies, the man feared for his brother's life and shot Valentin. A single round hit Valentin, who was dead at the scene when deputies arrived minutes later.

The man who fired the shot was transported to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial for evaluation following a medical episode believed to be related to anxiety, a report states.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Monday morning.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time. News 13 isn't reporting the shooter's name or the brother's name, based on our Crime Guidelines.
