Amateur radio operators on the Space Coast will be showing off their skills this weekend and how they play a key role during the Atlantic hurricane season.

Ham radio operators are setting up shop to encourage people to learn more about their craft, as well as their role during storms.

It's all part of the National Amateur Radio Day exercise.

Groups from across the country — including some from Brevard County — will be out teaching people about ham radio and will be providing some hands-on experience.

There will be information about getting an amateur radio license, setting up a station and getting on-air.

Ham radio operators provide critical communications during emergencies like hurricanes.

Members of the Harris-Intersil Amateur Radio Club (HIARC) will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise June 27-28 at the Grant Seafood Festival site, 4580 1st St., in Grant.

Platinum Coast Amateur Radio Society (PCARS) will be holding its field day at the club station at the Melbourne Fire Department training center off Electronics Drive, a little north and east of the intersection of Aurora Road and Wickham Road in Melbourne.
