Here's what you need to know for Central Florida's weather for Tuesday and the rest of the week:

  • Feels-like temperatures in the 100s for most of the week
  • Rain chances around 40-50% for the days ahead
  • The tropics remain quiet at this time

Today has been another hot and humid day across Central Florida. Highs were in the mid to upper 90’s, and the heat index hit triple digits for the eighth day in a row. This evening we will see some scattered showers and storms throughout the region, especially in the inland areas.

Storms Tuesday brought huge amounts of lightning.

A brush fire in east Orange County was caused by lightning.

The 10-acre fire happened near Sheldon Street in the Wedgefield community. No homes were damaged.

“They said they heard a big boom and that’s when the flames started,” said resident Kevin Ferguson.

Witnesses say lightning sparked the fire. The fire is under control, but at one point came close to three homes.

"Brush fire season is pretty much over and the dry season is over," said Battalion Chief Lee Reid with Orange County Fire Rescue. "We’re into the rainy season now and unfortunately with the rain comes a lot of lightning and thunderstorms."

A fire at a home in the Heathrow community was also believed to be caused by lightning.

The 10,000-square-foot home was located on Bridgewater Drive.

No one was hurt, but the people inside did have quite a scare.

"We talked to the owner and they said they heard a large boom during the storm, started smelling smoke, immediately called 911 and we arrived and saw flames through the roof," said Lt. Alisa Keyes with Seminole County Fire Rescue.

Kissimmee Utilities Authority also handled power outages affecting 2,725 customers in Kissimmee. The weather is the likely cause.

Power usage hits a record

Orlando Utility Commission reports the energy provider set a record on Monday for the amount of power its customers used. A company spokesperson says at its peak, 1206 megawatts were used. That number is 4 megawatts more than another record that was set just 4 days before that. The utility recommends using ceiling fans to help cool your home and making sure you turn them off when you leave the room.

Lows will be warm and muggy with temperatures in the mid 70’s. Isolated showers and storms will continue to diminish overnight.

Wednesday we will see more hot and humid temperatures with highs in the 90’s. Perhaps you will be able to cool down as more afternoon showers and storms build.

The rest of this week we will rinse and repeat each day.  Highs will be hot in the low to mid 90’s, and lows will be warm in the mid 70’s. Afternoon showers and storms are likely.

In the tropics, we do not expect any development over the next few days.
