A jury has reached a verdict in the trial of David Damus.

The jury found Damus, 22, guilty of first-degree murder and armed burglary in a deadly shooting spree in Osceola County in June 2013.

The verdict caused emotional outbursts on both sides.

Damus' family said the 22-year-old was found guilty because of his race.

“Injustice! He’s black! There were no fingerprints!” family members could be heard shouting.

“That ridiculous," said state attorney Jeff Ashton, who tried the case. "We, the grand jury indicted Mr. Damus based on the evidence against him, not based on anything else.”

Damus is one of four people accused of murdering 22-year-old Eric Roopnarine. His defense said that while Damus admitted to being at Roopnarine's house, he wasn't the one who killed him.

“We have justice for my son, justice was served,” said Roopnarine's mother as she left the courtroom with the family.

Damus is one of four people accused in the murder. Co-defendant Juan Muriel took a plea deal and agreed to testify against the suspected accomplices. Defendants Victoria Rios and Konrad Schafer are still awaiting trial.

Damus now faces life in prison.

Jurors heard closing arguments Thursday morning and then received jury instructions. Deliberations began around 11:15 a.m.

The trial began Monday, and Damus took the stand in his own defense Wednesday. He said he didn't kill Roopnarine and insists the State Attorney's Office is conspiring against him.

"What happened to Eric is messed up, man," Damus testified Wednesday. "He deserves justice, but I'm not the one who did it to him."

Although Damus admitted he was there July 4, 2013, when Roopnarine was shot and stabbed to death, he said he was just there to make sure his new friend, Victoria Rios, didn't run into any problems when she prostituted herself to Roopnarine.

Damus said Konrad Schafer was the one behind the murder. Schafer, who was 15 years old at the time, is the so-called ringleader in the spree of shootings.

"But he opened the door, he came inside with the rifle and then I — well I didn't know who it was," Damus said during his testimony. "So, pushed the rifle away, and that's when I saw that it was Konrad."

Damus claims he walked away and that's when Schafer killed Roopnarine.

Damus also said the only reason he agreed to help rob Roopnarine was because he was scared.

"Because he's standing there with his rifle and he just killed somebody," Damus said. "I'm doing what he says."

Damus is also accused of being involved in a series of shootings in 2013, including the death of 17-year-old David Guerrero, who was shot and killed on his way to a bus stop.

Prosecutors argued the evidence proves Damus was there during the murder, but the defense told the jury he had nothing to do with it and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, the state attorney continues to claim that Damus lied on the stand.

"How did he know that the knife was in the holder, if he wasn't in the house when it happened," the state attorney said.
