Brevard County commissioners have approved a multimillion-dollar plan to upgrade Space Coast Stadium, where an amateur sports outfit in Osceola County will now be relocating.

The board and the U.S. Specialty Sports Association agreed Tuesday to move to the contract negotiation stages for the group's move to the Viera complex.

Part of the deal involves the association guaranteeing 75,000 hotel room nights in the first year of operation, and 100,000 by the third year.

Backers of the plan say it will be a boom for tourism, bringing in thousands of athletes for tournaments each year.

Previous numbers indicated the county would need to spend $10 million to upgrade the Space Coast Stadium complex, currently the home of the Brevard County Manatees minor league baseball club.

The Washington Nationals are leaving their current spring training home in Viera and heading south to West Palm Beach in the next couple years.
