The Maitland Police Department headquarters has reopened after a suspicious package prompted an evacuation of the building Friday.

The building was evacuated before noon "in an abundance of caution" as hazardous materials crews investigated a package that was turned over to police on Thursday, according to Maitland police Lt. Louis Grindle.

As police were preparing to check what was inside the envelope, they decided to call in the Maitland Fire Department to investigate.

When crews opened the envelope, they found it empty, and gave the all clear to reopen police headquarters shortly after 2 p.m.

Maitland's dispatch is operated out of Apopka, and so 911 calls were not impacted during the evacuation.
