From legal aide to legal trouble.

A Brevard County man who worked in the justice system is now he's in trouble himself, accused of running a marijuana operation.

And it's possible he would have gotten away with it if not for the deadly encounter that happened just days earlier.

Adam Morkan, 45, is a probation officer for the Department of Juvenile Justice.

"A probation officer who is there to supervise juveniles who have gotten in trouble. Probably many for the same thing he was growing in his house," said Major Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Neighbors we spoke to off-camera were shocked to learn of the arrest and the pot.

But it’s how deputies made their find that’s also unusual.

On April 24, deputies said Morken's son, 24-year-old Joshua Morkan, was stabbed to death by his younger brother, 21-year-old Ian Morkan on Reef Avenue, just yards away from the home on Abalone Avenue.

It was during that investigation that detectives learned about the grow house, even though the two incidents aren’t connected.

"They gathered about 75 plants that were being grown inside the residence, as well as some marijuana that had already been cultivated," Major Goodyear said.

We checked and found in addition to working with the DJJ in Indian River County for the last year, Morkan has worked with children in other capacities, including as a Spanish teacher at Melbourne High from 2003-2004.

He also worked at the now-closed Explorer Charter School in Brevard County.

Morkan has since resigned from his probation officer position. He is charged with manufacturing marijuana with the intent to sell. No charges have been filed in the stabbing death of his son.

We went to the family home Thursday, but no one wanted to comment.
