A Orange County school board met with a private developer over plans to build a school in the Avalon Park community -- but the meeting was not a welcome one.

The Orange County Commission asked Orange County public schools to hold this meeting so they could look at the proposal from the private developer, Beat Kahli.

Kahli offered a proposal last week to build five privately-funded public schools.

One of Kahli's plans would put the relief middle school on a new property that the district would have to buy from Kahli.

Monday's meeting comes after over 100 people showed up at last week's county commission meeting to discuss the new school.

The county commission is trying to decide what to do about the overcrowding at Avalon Middle School, which has over 800 more students than it was built for.

The school board is asking to use a site in Avalon Park they already own to build the school but it would require re-zoning the site, which is currently for an elementary school.

There were some contentious moments between school board Chairman Bill Sublette and Kahli during Monday's meeting.

"I do want to make clear we did not call this meeting, we did not ask for this meeting and we are here in good faith to explore alternatives," said Sublette to Kahli, "But at this late stage, if you had called this meeting a year and half ago, or even a year ago, but at this late stage when we are trying to break ground on the school it was very unopportune to put it politely."

No decision was made at Monday's meeting. A decision will be made on May 19 by commissioners on whether the school district's land can be used.

The district is eager because they still want to open this relief school in the fall of 2016.
