A 58-year-old man was shot and killed by a Lake County deputy Saturday in Clermont after he threatened family members and deputies with a knife.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office received a call around 3 p.m. regarding a family member who was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the home. The parents, who are the homeowners, wanted their son, Daniel Howard Davis, to leave the residence.

Davis repeatedly refused to leave, deputies said.

Two deputies arrived to the home along the 8000 block of Firestone Circle and attempted to get Davis to leave the home, but he continued to refuse and was belligerent with deputies, according to John Harrell, public information officer for the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

During a conversation with deputies, Davis pulled out a buck knife with a locking blade. One deputy immediately deployed his stun gun on Davis. The man was able to remove the prongs. He then stated that "someone was going to die" and then lunged at the other deputy with the knife, Harrell said.

The deputy shot Davis. He died at the scene.

Davis' mother told deputies at the scene that her son stated earlier in the day that he was going to die Saturday.

"According to his parents, he suffers from some mental illnesses and was actually released from a mental health facility in Orlando at the end of this week or at the beginning of this week," Harrell said.

Davis has a criminal history, including being arrested in 2006 on criminal mischief and resisting arrest without violence.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called in to investigate the deputy-involved shooting.

Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a preliminary investigation, which is standard procedure in deputy-involved shootings.

No other information was released.
