A 20-year-old woman is dead after crashing her motor scooter into pickup truck driven by an off-duty Volusia County deputy in Daytona Beach.

The crash happened around noon near the intersection of Bellevue Avenue and Lockhart Street, between Nova Road and U.S. Highway 1.

According to Daytona Beach police, Shardavia Allen was riding a scooter westbound on Bellevue Avenue, when for some reason she drifted across the double yellow line into the eastbound side of the road.

The deputy, identified as Jason Lewis, quickly slowed down, but police said Allen crashed into the left-front area of Lewis' pickup truck. Allen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Poplice said this may have been a case of distracted driving.

"One of the witnesses states that she may have been distracted, looking down at her cell phone," Daytona Beach Police spokesperson Jimmie Flynt said.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Lewis was off duty on his lunch break, and the pickup is his personal vehicle.

No charges were expected in the crash, police said.
