The Moody Boat Launch was built more than 25 years ago.

It sits under the huge bridge crossing the Intracoastal Waterway into Flagler Beach.

For regulars here, it can be a challenge to get a boat in and out. For instance, at low tide, there's only about a foot-and-a-half of water in the basin. That leaves little room for maneuvering.

Otto Pope is a kayaker so that doesn't really bother him.

"But I understand if you've got a 20-, 22-foot boat, it might be difficult getting out of here at low tide," he said.

Flagler County wants to do about $240,000 in improvements here, which would include dredging. That hasn't been done since the launch was opened.

They also want to replace the current docks with floating docks, which rise and fall with the tide and make it easier to get in and out of boats.

Pope has another improvement he thinks some might like to see.

"The lavatories are pretty primitive but adequate for me," he said. "But you know, the ladies like it a little nicer. That's always an issue."

Yes, the bathrooms would be improved too, to make them comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act. Better lighting would also be added.

Similar improvements are planned for the launch at Herschel King Park, the only ICW access on the west side of the waterway in Flagler County, but about $100,000 less, as no dredging or improved restrooms are needed here.

That's good news according to Tyler Kuback of Palm Coast.

“It's good," he said. "I go fishing once a week. Bigger docks, easier access to kick the boat out.”

To fund these projects, Flagler County proposes a 50/50 split with the Florida Inland Navigational District.

FIND grants would be paired with county money. The county's portion would come primarily from those who would use these facilities in the form of boater registration fees.

If approved, just $20,000 would come out of the county's General Fund for both projects.
