Police held a solemn ceremony Thursday honoring two Palm Bay officers killed in the line of duty 28 years ago.

Several dozen Palm Bay police officers and employees gathered to remember officers Ronald Grogan and Gerald Johnson, who were shot and killed on April 23, 1987.

The two officers were among six people shot and killed by William Cruse during the shooting spree in a grocery store parking lot.

Mourners placed two wreaths Thursday at a memorial for the two fallen officers in Sacrifice Park, near the police department.

Among the crowd was Don Smith, a now-retired officer who was on duty that fateful day, and who comes to the memorial ceremony for Grogan and Johnson every year.

"So the community remembers, so law enforcement remembers," Smith said.

The memorial at Sacrifice Park contains two permanent plaques with the officers' names.

Cruse died on death row in 2009.
