Port Canaveral is hoping to fast track a plan that can connect the seaport to rail line.

The Canaveral Port Authority will consider the plan at their meeting Wednesday morning, hoping it could bring thousands of jobs to Brevard County.

Port Canaveral CEO John Walsh says adding rail could triple the number of jobs the cargo industry creates in the next decade.

The demand is now so port commissioners will decide if they want to start negotiations with the Kennedy Space Center to lease land at the Jay-Jay Bridge Rail Yard, just north of Titusville.

That's the same rail yard where NASA brought in the solid rocket boosters for space shuttle launches.

The plan would allow companies to unload their cargo, like cars or crops, and put them onto a floating rail barge.  The barge would then make its way from the port, up the Indian River to the rail yard.

Port leaders would like to have the temporary plan in place and start shipping cargo by rail in the next four to six months.

They are working on a long term plan that would bring rail to the port either through the Kennedy Space Center or along State Road 528, but that is two to three years down the road.

Walsh says having a port connection to rail could attract more container and cargo vessels, bringing millions of dollars in investments and create 15,000 cargo and rail-related jobs in the next seven to ten years.

But Walsh warns that if the port doesn't connect to rail, it would limit the growth in the cargo industry and what cargo they do have, would be shipped by truck, causing congestion on SR-528 and US-1.
