Two Fruitland Park police officers are on paid administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts an investigation, officials said Wednesday.

Todd English, the interim chief of police in Fruitland Park, confirmed he placed the officers on leave.

"As a result of this investigation, we are unable to release the names of the officers at this time," English said.

This is the third time in less than a year that Fruitland Park police officers have had run-ins with the law.

English took over the police department last month after former chief Terry Isaacs retired abruptly after being placed on leave for an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint from a fellow officer.

The agency spent nine months prior to Isaacs' retirement reeling from a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation after FBI informations claimed two Fruitland Park police officers were members of the Ku Klux Klan.

Deputy Chief David Borst resigned, and Cpl. George Hunnewell was fired.

That wasn't the only thing the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was investigating, though.

"I was contacted on or about the time I took over the department of an ongoing investigation," English said.

It's unclear what the two police officers are accused of doing in the latest investigation.

An FDLE official has confirmed it is criminal in nature, though.

"We are conducting a criminal investigation that potentially involves members of the (Fruitland Park Police Department," said Gretl Plessinger, of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. "At this time, we will not identify the specific names we are investigating or the identity of the individuals who are suspects."

English said he has shifted schedules, and the small department will be able to meet the needs of residents. He also said he has no long-term interest in being the city's police chief.

"In a tough and trying time like this, or any past experiences, what I've relayed to the department is the importance of supporting each other through this," English said.
