There's a push in Brevard County for a second dog-friendly beach. This beach would extend from south of the Cocoa Beach city limits about a mile down to Patrick Air Force Base.
People living in the area said it’s difficult for them because they have no place to safely walk their pooches unless they drive 10 miles south to Canova Beach Dog Park.
The county's lone beach dog park has been around for a couple years, is popular and is consistently packed with people and dogs.
People like Corey Burgess of Palm Bay and her dog Marley.
"The more dog parks the better," she said.
For Burgess it's a fairly short drive to get to a beach where dogs are allowed. But others are hoping to get one a lot closer to where they live.
A petition is now circulating for a dog-friendly beach be allowed in the south Cocoa Beach area -- which is unincorporated. Leashed dogs would be allowed on the beach before 10 am and after 5 pm only.
Petition organizers said it's needed especially in the narrow strip of land State Road A1A splits between the Atlantic Ocean and Banana River.
It's an area with few sidewalks, and a busy street they said is dangerous to walk their pets.
Jayne Miller of Melbourne brought her family visiting from Georgia to the only dog beach Friday. Tagging along is their dog Abby.
But Miller said people in south Cocoa Beach would prefer to stay local for them and their dogs to enjoy the sand and water.
"I have a lot of friends up there with dogs, they'd love to have it," said Miller.
We spoke to a representative in Commissioner Jim Barfield's office, whose district the section of beach is in, and we're told he will be meeting with the organizers about the idea in the coming weeks.
Right now the petition has more than 2,000 signatures.
We spoke by phone to a petition organizer who didn't want to grant an interview at this time.
