A Brevard County man faces a slew of charges after leading law enforcement on a dramatic chase Friday morning, ramming police cars, driving backward and even blowing through an active crime scene, and for most of it missing a tire.

A sheriff's helicopter caught the wild chase on video as they said 24-year-old Thomas Schaffer put his life, and the life of multiple officers, in serious danger.

Amazingly, no one involved in the chase was hurt, which happened around 2 a.m. Friday, when few other drivers were on the road.

It began with the report of a stolen vehicle in the Port St. John area. Brevard County deputies on the lookout spotted a pickup matching the description.

Deputies said Schaffer was behind the wheel and a passenger was also in the truck.

Once the pursuit began, it was obvious Schaffer wasn't going to stop. Deputies said Schaffer sped off north, toward Titusville, blowing through a crime scene on U.S. Highway 1, where investigators were still at the scene of a deadly hit-and-run crash involving a motorcyclist that happened just hours earlier.

As the sheriff's helicopter hovered overhead, officers deployed stop sticks, puncturing one of the pickup's tires.

"Back rear tire is completely gone. We're riding on a rim," an officer could be heard saying in the recording.

Sparks flew into the night sky as the rim hit the road as the pickup sped away, and onto the campus of Jackson Middle School.

The chase continued to the area of Rosehill Avenue and Cleveland Street, where deputies said Schaffer began driving backward as an officer pointed a gun at his truck.

Moments later, the pickup clipped a deputy's car with an officer inside. The deputy was not hurt.

The chase went on into the River Oaks subdivision, where deputie ssaid Schaffer turned into a dead end and drove through a wooded area before getting stuck in sugar sand. That was where officers converged, and one beat on the driver side window.

Deputies said Schaffer resisted, and they used stun guns to take him into custody.

Schaffer faces a host of charges including driving under the influence of alcohol, aggravated battery on an officer, and fleeing.

On top of that, records show Schaffer's driver's license has been suspended since 2006.
