A 19-year-old man remains in jail after he was accused of beating and raping his 3-year-old stepdaughter, who died two days after the incident. But investigators said they are waiting for the medical report to determine if charges will be upgraded.

Pascal Kaufmann was arrested in November 2014 and charged with four counts of sexual battery. He remains in the Orange County Jail without bond.

Officials with the State Attorney's Office told News 13 that charges are likely to be upgraded against Kaufmann, but they are waiting for the medical examiner's report before any decision is made.

The story began with a frantic 911 call last year.

Mother to dispatcher: "I don't know. My husband just called me. I'm coming home from work right now because he called me and he said something (is) seriously wrong with her."

After the doctors examined the 3-year-old, the investigation at The Villas of Orlando, located along Conway Road, quickly focused on Kaufmann, a German citizen who had just married the child’s mother a week before the girl died.

Investigators said the 3-year-old girl was raped and beaten while the mother was at work. Kaufmann was home alone with the child.

Investigators with the Department of Children and Families said the girl died two days later from a head injury.

Kaufmann told police the girl fell off the bed and injured herself, but in a recorded interview with police that was just released, the 30-year-old mother said Kaufmann was "freaking out" about going to jail.

Detective: "But before you get in the ambulance, he told you that he thought he was going to jail?"
Mother:
"Yes."
Detective:
"OK. Did he say why he thought he was going to jail?"
Mother:
"He's like, 'I'm going to jail.' You know, he was like, 'I hurt your daughter. I'm going to jail.' And I'm like, 'You're not going to jail.' You know, I had no idea. I'm like, 'You're not going to jail. You know, they're (going to) know the truth. They're (going to) know the truth. You know, you're not (going to) go to jail. Nothing happened. She's (going to) be fine.' And I — it was like I was consoling him."

The child's mother filed for divorce from Kaufmann in January.

Kaufmann's rape trial is tentatively set for June 29.
