If you have received a red light camera citation — or any other kind of traffic ticket — in Flagler County but put off paying the fine, you're in luck.

The Flagler County Clerk of the Circuit Court's office will hold a one-day event in which the 40 percent collections fee will be waived.

The event, which has been dubbed "Operation Green Light," will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, April 17.

You will also have the opportunity to reinstate your license once you have paid the ticket in full. Payment is accepted by cash, check, money order or credit card.

If a driver fails to pay the $154 red light camera citation, it then goes to the Clerk of the Court, where it becomes a $256 traffic citation.

If a driver still doesn't pay, late fees worth $30 are added. The citation then heads to a collection agency.

"That adds on 40 percent — $114.80 — on top of what was $154, so now it's a little over $400," said Gail Wadsworth, Flagler County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Wadsworth's office is joining 60 of Florida's 67 counties in Florida offering "Operation Green Light."

The fine and the late fees will stick, but the office will waive the 40 percent collection service charge if the rest of the fine is paid by April 17.

About $1.9 million in fines are currently in collections, Wadsworth said.

A lot of the people the event is targeting are people who were hit with tickets during the recession — a time when people had to make some difficult decisions over something as simple as paying a speeding ticket.

"This was last," she said. "Do you buy groceries? Diapers? Do you pay your traffic ticket?"

A suspended license will also be reinstated if the fine is paid in full.

"Speed just a little," Wadsworth said, "and now you're driving knowingly on a suspended license. That's not a civil traffic infraction, that's a criminal traffic (infraction). It's your 'go to jail free card.'"

Some counties are offering a week-long amnesty while others, like Flagler and Volusia counties, are offering it for one day.
