The search is on in Lake County for a dog that attacked two children on Friday.

Lake County Animal Control officers responded to the area along near 25847 Westmoreland St., in Sorrento, in reference to a dog bite.

The officers were advised that two boys were playing in the yard in front of the home when a brown- or brindle-colored pit bull came out of a wooded area and attacked both children.

One of the victims suffered a serious leg injury, when the dog tore into his calf. He was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.

Crews searched the area but were unable to locate the dog.

Meanwhile, a Rottweiler named Burkhardt is being credited with saving the day, by chasing away the dog after the initial attack.

“I’ve lived here for 22 years. There’s never been a dog problem in this neighborhood at all," shared neighbor Gary Lanzendorf, who is Burkhardt's owner. "We get bears all the time come out here but never dogs. There was four kids here and none of them had ever seen this dog before. It had a little paracord around its neck that looked like it had been broken off."

Deputies in the area have been informed about the attack.

“Animal Control is under the sheriff’s office and Animal Control will be doing extra patrols and our zone deputies, they’ll be in the area and they’ll be looking out as well. It will be an extra patrol out here this weekend," explained Sgt. Fred Jones with the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

If the dog in question is tracked back to its owner, that person could face criminal and civil charges.
