The audible alarms were working and the safety arms were lowered when an SUV collided with a SunRail train Wednesday in Maitland.

Investigators are now trying to determine out if the driver intentionally ran the barriers at the crossing.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Thursday near Maitland and Horatio avenues with an SUV and a train coming from DeBary.

The driver wasn't injured. There were 160 passengers on the train at the time of the crash, but no injuries were reported on the train, either.

Trains were delayed for about an hour.

SunRail officials on Thursday said the message is simple: If the arms are down and the bells are ringing, you should stop and wait for the train to pass. Trying to save a few minutes on your commute could be dangerous — and costly.

Drivers who go around, under or through a lowered and flashing safety arm in Orange County face a $204 fine. The infraction could hit drivers with four points in their license.

"People that go around the gates are endangering themselves, other drivers, our crew and passengers on board," said Jessica Keane, a SunRail spokeswoman.

There have been five other collisions between a vehicle and a train since SunRail began service in May 2014.
