A University of Central Florida shuttle bus caught fire Monday just south of campus, forcing firefighters to shut down Challenger Parkway at North Alafaya Trail while they put out the flames.

Orange County Fire Rescue responded to the fire just after 1:30 p.m. Everyone on board the UCF bus evacuated the vehicle safely, fire officials said.

According to a UCF official, four students and a driver were on the bus when it caught fire. The bus was serving Route 10, which connects UCF with the Lofts and Orion on Orpington apartments.

Another bus arrived to pick up the students and was continuing to serve that route in place of the bus that caught fire, which was seriously damaged.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, the UCF official said.
