Sunday was the busiest day in Port Canaveral's history, as a record-breaking number of passengers moved through the Brevard County port.

Six cruise ships were docked at the port as tens of thousands of people made their way to and from the county.

Port Canaveral opened up its newest cruise terminal a few months ago. A plan calls for four new cruise terminals in the next decade, including one in 2016.

The port has hosted six cruise ships once before, when it happened last month.

On Sunday, there were five home port ships and one port-of-call vessel, bringing 31,000 passengers through the port.

Bernard and Janice Caffary, of Lakeland, were just two people passing through the port Sunday. The couple was embarking on its 100th cruise aboard the Carnival Sensation.

"(It's) home away from home," Janice Caffary said. "As soon as we walk on this ship, we know we're home."

Carnival officials said the Caffarys are the first in the company's history to take 100 trips on the same boat. The couple said they enjoy the Sensation because of the crew and because Port Canaveral is the ship's home port.

"This port is the most user-friendly port that we've been in," Bernard Caffary said. "Especially in the embarkation, there's less confusion getting on the ship and off the ship."

This year, about 4.2 million passengers are expected to come through the port. The passenger count is expected to grow to 5 million in 2016 and then 6 million in 2017.

"Our expansion in the cruise industry is just going to be tremendous," said David Poston, of the Canaveral Port Authority. "We're looking at modifications to existing cruise terminals, (and) we just opened our new cruise terminal. We're even looking at the possibility at another cruise terminal in the very near future."

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, one of the world's largest cruise ships, is scheduled to start sailing from Port Canaveral in 2016.

Port Canaveral is expected to surpass Miami as the world's busiest cruise port by 2018 or 2019.
