When the Washington Nationals move their Spring Training facilities out of Viera, only one professional baseball team will play at Space Coast Stadium.

But it's still possible even that club could leave too and call Melbourne home.

The idea of a new baseball park for the Brevard County Manatees, the Class-A minor league team for the Milwaukee Brewers, was brought up at this week's city council meeting.

The three-and-a-half-acre plot of land is on the edge of downtown Melbourne, situated along New Haven Avenue, extending down to the waterfront area.

Right next to the property is Blossom House Flowers.

"Putting something else in there would be good, but not a baseball stadium," said owner Yong Mills.

Mills said her livelihood depends on what, if anything, is built next door. She added that the vacant lot is used as parking for Friday Fest and other regular events.

"It doesn't stay empty all the time, they use it," she said.

The Washington Nationals are bound for West Palm Beach in a deal that appears all but done, leaving their long time Spring Training home in Viera.

The Manatees use Space Coast Stadium for their summer season, bringing in nearly $three million in economic impact each year, and they said the team wants to stay in Central Florida.

"We've obviously received several inquiries over the past couple years from nearby communities that value the economic impact delivered by Minor League Baseball," General Manager Kyle Smith said. "We believe there are a couple of viable options within Brevard County but our timeline is short and the window is closing. The exit of the Nationals heightens our sense of urgency and expedites our timeline."

City manager Mike McNees is aware of the idea, and said it's an interesting concept that could bolster the ongoing redevelopment efforts of downtown, and bringing in thousands of baseball fans would add to it.

"Decide whether it's the right thing for Melbourne, the location, who would pay, all I can say is we are listening," said McNees.

But for business owners like Yong Mills, she said she wasn't notified of the possibility of a ballpark in the first place, and she's worried it could force her "out."

"I hope it doesn't come to that," she said.

Melbourne City Council will talk about the proposed stadium idea at its March 10 meeting.
