Bethune-Cookman University’s president is trying to calm the nerves of students, staff and parents after a shooting Monday night on campus.

Students were told Tuesday they could continue attending classes without any fear, even though a suspect or suspects are walking the streets.

Calls to 911 are shedding more light into what happened Monday night with two, possibly more people on the B-CU campus exchanging gunfire, their bullets missing their intended targets and striking innocent students instead.

University President Dr. Edison O. Jackson had some stern words for anyone involved, while trying to tell students they were safe to continue with campus life.

"What occurred yesterday is not acceptable," said an upset Dr. Jackson.

What Jackson finds unacceptable is what can be seen on surveillance, which looks like something out of a movie. A person steps out of a black vehicle, opens fire and then rushes back to the vehicle for a quick getaway.

One 911 caller said she witnessed a fight earlier before gunfire erupted.

Caller: "There was a fight earlier. A small black car, he left the back parking lot. He fired about, I don't know, just now he fired about 12 shots."

Three bystanders were hurt, but their injuries were not serious.

Jackson told students and staff packed into the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center steps are being taken to keep everyone safe.

"We want to make sure that you can be around this campus, enjoy this campus without having to fear for your safety," the university president said.

The gunmen in the shooting, however, have not been caught.

"So I don't know, I don't really feel safe," said international student Patricia Trevisan.

"I'm still kinda in danger, because I don't know if I'm gonna get shot or anything," said Petra Merrick.

Jackson also told students that if they know anything, they must speak up before tragedy strikes again.

The university is offering a $1,000 reward for any information that will help police find the people responsible for Monday night's shooting.
