A first of its kind spacecraft "landing pad" is coming to the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The 45th Space Wing, stationed at Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County, announced a five-year lease agreement with SpaceX.

The private company will use historic Launch Complex 13 to land rockets in hopes to making them reusable after launch.

SpaceX was set to launch a Falcon 9 rocket Tuesday with an Air Force satellite on board. As soon as the DSCOVR satellite is on its way to space, SpaceX will then attempt to land the first stage of the rocket on a floating barge in the Atlantic Ocean.

The company is hoping to prove they can land rockets safely on a barge before they start landing the rockets on land. SpaceX's last attempt to land a rocket on a barge ended in a giant fireball.

With Tuesday's announcement, we now know that when SpaceX does eventually plan to start landing the rockets on solid ground, it will be at Complex 13, a former Atlas rocket launch pad last used in April 1978, when SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was just 6 years old.
