An Orange County deputy was injured Sunday night after the sheriff's office said a wanted fugitive rammed him with his car.

It happened around 9:15 p.m. near Holden Avenue and South Orange Blossom Trail.

The sheriff’s office said Deputies Aaron Jenkins and Matthew Fewless were patrolling through the neighborhood when they pulled over a white Chevy Impala.

The deputies got out of their patrol vehicle and that’s when investigators said 37-year-old Danny Wright made a U-turn and drove straight at the deputies.

"We know he comes right at our deputy," said Capt. Angelo Nieves, a sheriff's office spokesman. "He's hit. He's pinned between the vehicle and the suspect's car. Shots are fired. He goes down as well."

The sheriff’s office said both deputies feared for the lives and fired at Wright and his passenger, 62-year-old Alan Grant.

"He had a 4,000-pound vehicle, which is a weapon," Nieves said.

The suspects were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Deputies said Grant is cooperating with investigators.

Jenkins also sustained injuries to his lower body and was hospitalized. He was released Monday morning and is recovering at home. Fewless was not injured.

Investigators said Wright, who was arrested in Tennessee on robbery charges, escaped from custody Jan. 7 after climbing through the ceiling at a mental institution. He was also undergoing a psychological evaluation after throwing a cup of urine on a deputy.

Wright now faces attempted murder charges.

It is not known if the suspects were armed, if anything was inside the car or why they were pulled over.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in deputy-involved shootings.
