Four adults and a child were injured Sunday morning after police say they were attacked by a pit bull.

The Edgewater Police Department says Edgewater Fire Rescue was called to a home on Marilyn Drive for the report of a pit bull that bit a toddler and was attempting to bite the adults as they tried to rescue the child.

“She was screaming and crying,” said Roger Smith, attacked by dog.

Smith said he tried to stop the dog, but it just turned on him.

“A few stiches in my arm, temporarily until tomorrow, when I have to go and see a hand specialist,” said Smith.

Smith wasn’t the only person hurt. Three other people were injured. His roommate’s dog was also attacked.

Smith said a neighbor was feeding the dog while the owner was out of town and brought the child with her. The dog immediately became aggressive towards the child. Another neighbor heard the commotion and ran outside.

“I came outside with the bat and what not and I seen the dog. I dropped the bat then I just went over to the dog. I tried to pull it off, but I still have marks right here. I mean they’re small, but its marks nonetheless from the dog biting,” said Robert Taylor.

Police said firefighters were able to hold the dog at bay with a fire hose and fire extinguisher until police officers arrived.

Investigators said an Edgewater Police Department officer was able to secure the dog in the back of a patrol car.

Taylor said fire crews had to use a fire hose and fire extinguisher to hold the dog down until police officers arrived. The dog is being held under quarantine at the city’s animal shelter. Smith hopes that the dog’s owner comes home soon so he can talk with her.

“I’m not mad at her, she wasn’t here, but she should have been more responsible for her dog,” said Smith.

The owner of the dog is out of town. A detective with the police department said no charges have been filed.
